Osteopathy for Chronic Pain
Fractured. Broken. Sprained. Strained. Injured. All the hurts the body can experience. With any injury, there is a 48-72 hour inflammatory period where the body is trying to deal with any infections: swelling, heat, acute pain, redness or pressure.
Here’s a Quick Review of First aid for you.
- Sprained/strained? R.I.C.E (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) is best for 24-48 hrs.
- Maybe fractured/broken? Go to Emergency to get it x-rayed and set.
- There is a significant open wound? (Cover with a sterile dressing and go to Emergency!)
As the wounds heal, your range of motion may be limited in that area. This is a compensation adopted by your nervous system: the intensity of the injury “buffered” into the tissues around it. This is when you contact a manual therapist (physiotherapy, massage, osteopathy) to treat the underlying injury (called the sub-acute state of the injury).
Sometimes the compensation continues on as chronic pain. An expected amount of time for the injury to heal has passed and your pain is still alive. It sucks!
Most manual therapists have been trained to assess and treat the affected joint or area and the joints above/below for compensation. But osteopathy is far more comprehensive!!!!!!!!!! (Excessive exclamations courtesy of Tanya: who feels this needs to be shouted out. Smiles.)
I (Myron) look throughout the whole body for the compensation that the nervous system “buffered.”… and from my experience, over 90% of chronic injuries have some associated organ involvement.
Huh?! (You say, because it does sound odd!) What does ‘Organ Involvement’ mean?!
Your internal organs are involved in the chronic pain you are experiencing, even if it is pain felt in other areas of the body than your internal organs. Visceral refers to feeling in or around the internal organs, but the brain often does not identify these visceral sensations.
Chronic pain often has a visceral pattern connected to it, of which you may not be consciously aware. I mean, how many of you have noticed “my liver hurts”?!
I notice it for you and then help it shift.
Peaked your interest yet?!
Come see if your chronic pain matches a visceral pattern. Looking at the body as a “WHOLE” can resolve many common aches and pains.
