Resilience in Uncertainty

Pause

Gaze into this picture for a moment…

Imagine yourself there in a temperature-perfect day…

(Gazing at beautiful pictures can bring a calmer feeling to our bodies- read the research)

Have you paused to notice how shifts in our current world are affecting you?

Uneasiness. Overwhelm. Panic. Depression. For some, the shifting in our world is causing definite Suffering.

Some of us neuroceptively feel the distress of others. Neuroception is our nervous system’s way of detecting cues of safety & danger, usually below the level of conscious awareness. It’s at work every moment we are around another person.

Stress in others can trigger stress reactions in us, unless we are mindfully aware & do the things that help ourselves not take in that extra stress…

Whether you are facing suffering, are uneasily wondering if suffering is coming, or are experiencing others’ stress, we all need ways to ground ourselves in these times.

Tips for taking care of you & your loved ones:

  1. Lean in to small, predictable routines. Predictability helps us feel safe, even when chaos is around us. Savor your morning walk, the sensation of getting into your pajamas, or the pleasant scent of your hand cream.

  2. Come back to your core values & purpose. What is one thing you deeply know as true about yourself? What do you stand for? Acting upon your values, even in small acts, will make a big difference to help you feel a bit more in control.

  3. Connect with your faith & spirituality. Most faiths & spiritual practices include healthy ways to ground in a chaotic world.

  4. Look for glimmers of goodness. Small, quieter moments. Like noticing a stranger waiting patiently at a busy grocery store line. The chatter of a crow or giggle of a child. The courtesy most drivers offer each other.

This isn’t about avoiding or pretending everything is fine when its not. It’s about enhancing our ways to move through this season of uncertainty with more resilience.

“Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.”- Helen Keller.

May you overcome,

Tanya & Myron
